Travel Australia: Tips
While Australia is very accommodating to foreign visitors, there are probably some differences from your home country that would be helpful to know before beginning your trip. With these tips for your travel in Australia, you should be well on your way to getting a head start on your trip before you even leave home!
Types of Travel Accommodation in Australia
- Resort - expansive hotel that provides accommodation, all meals, and some activities for recreation.
- Hotel - either a venue that offers travelers overnight accommodation or a pub that serves alcoholic drinks, or a combination of the two.
- Motel - accommodations aimed specifically at travelers on their driving journeys, with possible parking and private cooking facilities.
- Caravan Park - more rustic accommodations for mobile homes, recreational vehicles, and tent camping, with shower and toilet and cooking facilities to share with other travelers.
- Serviced Apartment - A private apartment with at least one bedroom and full cooking facilities and daily cleaning.
- Holiday Unit - The same as a serviced apartment but without the daily cleaning.
- Roadhouse - Rest stops in more isolated areas that provide travelers with car fuel, food and beverages, communication tools, and perhaps shower facilities.
- Hostel - Most popular with youth and Australia backpackers, hostels offer travelers inexpensive accommodation in shared rooms and various shared facilities.
- Bed and Breakfast - A room on a private property that comes with breakfast in the morning and includes either private or shared bathroom facilities.
- Farm Stay - The same kind of accommodation as a bed and breakfast, but in a more rural location such as a sheep or cattle farm. Guests receive all meals and often are encouraged to help with activities on the farm.
Australian Language
While you travel in Australia, you will probably begin to notice that local Australians have distinct accents and also refer to things with different terms than what you might be used to in your home country. One of the most important terms to know on your travel journey is that the term "bathroom" is different than the toilet. Bathroom is used to refer to the room that contains bathing facilities, which is often different from the room with the toilet. If you need to use the bathroom, try asking for the "toilet," the "Gents," the "Ladies," the "dunny," or the "loo." It might seem simple know, but this travel tip can make things a lot less confusing when you arrive in Australia!
Australian Land
Some of the most popular travel destinations in Australia include the territories of New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. Australia is separated into three different time zones with Western Standard Time, Central Standard Time, and Eastern Standard Time. Central Australia is one and a half hours ahead of Western Australia and Eastern Australia is two hours ahead of Western Australia.
