Australia Car Hire and General Driving Distances

Australia is a beautiful and majestic country, with many different places to see, and roads to take. So pack your Australian car hire with a few of the essentials including:
  1. A good map - an Australian car hire should always have a good reliable map, just in case you take a wrong turn on one of the scenic back roads!
  2. Lots of snacks and drinks - Remember to pack juice drinks or water to keep you hydrated along the way. Try to avoid hot drinks; they have a habit of ending up in people's laps! Having said this, bring lots of extra napkins to clean up any little spills along the way.
  3. A camera and lots of film - this is one of the most important things an Australian car hire can bring on a road trip! Australia is a country full of lush rainforests, gorgeous mountain views and rolling flatlands. Having a camera with lots of extra film will ensure you don't miss out on any of the pristine photo opportunities that pop up along the way!
  4. Your credit card and extra "emergency cash" - this is an essential; even the most organized Australian car hires should always bring along some extra emergency funds. You never know what emergencies could pop up along your trip (flat tires, car troubles, sicknesses etc.), in which you may require extra money. If you plan for these things before you leave, you will save yourself a lot of stress if they do unfortunately arise.
  5. Emergency phone numbers and reservations numbers - it is always a smart move to write down any emergency phone numbers you may need along the way (ex. Numbers for the hotel you are staying in, for the local police, travel agent or information centers). If you can it is also a good idea to tune to a local radio station of the area (contact the local Tourist and Information centre to find out the best frequencies), so you can keep up to date with traffic delays and weather reports.
Now that you're all packed you're ready to start your trip! Traveling with your four kids? You may only want to travel a short distance, say from Adelaide to Broken Hill (505 km). Is it just you and your sweetheart out for a leisurely drive? Maybe you would rather take your Australian car hire further, say from Cairns to Sydney (2722 km). Out in a convertible Australian car hire enjoying your newfound retirement freedom? Maybe take a longer day trip and go all the way from Brisbane to Perth (4492 km).

So say for example if you were traveling from Adelaide to Broken Hill, some of the things you are likely to see during the 505 Km trip are very different scenery from that of the rest of Australia. Broken Hill has been nicknamed "'Oasis of the West, ' Silver City' and the 'Capital of the Outback". The scenery leading to and surrounding Broken Hill consists of mainly flat desert-like lands, although the town itself surprises most visitors with its colorful and fragrant tropical gardens. Broken Hill was once a thriving mining town, but as the minerals and deposits slowly disappeared, tourism has rapidly replaced mining as the city's main form of income.

Not your ideal trip? Say you instead chose the longer drive from Cairns to Sydney. This selection may require you to stay over night, depending on how far and long you feel comfortable driving. Along this stretch there are a few attractions you will want to pull over to see. One is the Byron Bay Lighthouse. This historic structure warns ships of the protruding rocks below at Australia's most Easterly point.

Further along the trip you will drive around Fraser Island. Make sure to plan a stop! Fraser Island is the world's largest island made only of sand! It is listed as a World Heritage site and has become an eco tourism venue now that its timber and sand mining industries have been abandoned. It gained this prestige in recognition of the island's exceptional sand dune systems, its rainforests on sand, and its beautiful freshwater lakes.

Fraser Island is famous for its beautiful beaches, rainforests, and native wildlife such as the Fraser Island dingo, wallabies, loggerhead turtles and many kinds of exotic birds. Fraser Island is its own fantasyland full of exciting people, places and animals. Make a point to stop and experience all it has to offer!!

Still not what you are looking for in a road trip? Brisbane to Perth offers a much longer trek, with many more opportunities to experience the scenery and culture of the Down Under.

Driving to Perth from Brisbane offers you many different routes to take, and many different cities to pass through on your way. One of the ways you may choose to go is through Queensland and Alice Springs.

Queensland offers some of the most beautiful farmland around. Visitors can experience camel, lizard, or worm races at many of the homeland farms around the area. Queensland also offers beaches, coral reefs, rainforests, volcanic craters and many different strands of trees that can't be found anywhere else. Lastly, don't forget to visit the Riversleigh Fossil Centre. Part of the 12 million dollar Outback at Isa Complex at Mount Isa, Riversleigh offers visitors the chance to see some of the prehistoric inhabitants of Outback Australia. Inside the state-of-the-art museum, video displays and dioramas bring let us have a glimpse of what prehistoric Australia once looked like. Make an appointment to take a guided tour of the labs where Outback at Isa's trained staff and paleontologists free fossils of extinct creatures from their limestone beds.
