Melbourne Events Guide

Melbourne is a city rich in historical and cultural aspects. Be sure to take advantage of all that this beautiful city has to offer while you sightsee in your Australia car hire. Some local EVENTS that may interest you are:

Melbourne International Art Festival
This prestigious art exhibit usually runs during October and showcases some of the world's best-acclaimed artists. Held annually, this festival attracts painters, dancers, sculptures and musicians from all over; bringing them together for a week of fun filled cultural entertainment in one of Australia's biggest cities.

Melbourne Fringe Festival
Fringe Festival is not your average art showcase. It runs for 19 days, almost simultaneously with the Art Festival. With racier, and "louder" art than is customary at art shows, Fringe Festival offers something for the more diverse art lover.

Moomba Festival
The Moomba Festival is Australia's largest community festival and is clearly one of the local people's favourite annual celebrations. This celebration is held over the Australian labour-day weekend in March. The Moomba Waterfest highlights Melbourne's Yarra River and parklands. Entertainment includes a Fire Show, Carnival, Waterskiing, Live Music, Community Programs, Children's Activities, dragon boat races, fireworks and last but not least the famous Moomba Parade. The festival is a way to bring all Melbournians (and those of you visiting in your Australia car hire), together in celebration of the city, and the lifestyles of the inhabitants.

Melbourne Music and Blues Festival
The Melbourne Music Festival is considered one of Australia's largest festivals of popular music. It runs during the month of May and includes acts like Chicago and the Pretenders; this festival mixes smooth blues, and mellow jazz beats with the fast paced Melbourne culture. If you are more into sports than art, don't worry: the Aussies love their sports just as much as they love their music!

Popular Sporting Events:

The Australian Formula One Grand Prix
The Cinzano Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix is held every year in October for four exciting, action packed days. Come and experience all of the thrills and even some death defying crashes as the riders compete for the opportunity to be called the Cinzano Champion. The Grand Prix also offers an expo, amazing aerial displays, exhibits of the newest and hottest motor cross gear, and plus, there's a huge party! So jump in your Australian car hire, (but please, leave the racing to the professionals!) and head down to the racetrack for a good time.

The Australian Open Tennis Grand Slam
The Australian Open hosts some of the world's best and brightest tennis stars, as well as some up and comers. The open usually runs for a week in February, and is considered to be a world-class event. The Open is a definite once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for anyone traveling through Melbourne in their Australian car hire. With previous players including such tennis greats as Venus and Serena Williams, and Anna Kornikova, you know you're in for an exciting week of tennis!

Melbourne Cup Horse Race
This horse race is one of the biggest and best races in the world! The date (usually the first Tuesday in November) is even a national holiday in Australia! All for a horse race you say? You bet! Around 100 million dollars is annually wagered on this race. And that's a whole lot of money for a race that only lasts three minutes, as the horses run around the two-mile course at Flemington Racecourse. If you want to experience a side of authentic Melbourne tradition, be sure to join the entire city as they watch the ponies at the Melbourne Cup!!

Australian Rules Football
If you want to see grown men cry, why not catch a match of Australian Rules football? One of Melbourne's premier sporting events, Australian Rules football (also known as "footy"), is one of the hardest hitting and fastest moving games around! It is played with all the intensity of American football, but with some slight differences - the field is half the size of a regular football field, there is different scoring and… there are NO PADS!!! So why not take some time off, park your Australian car hire and take in a game, it may be painful, but not if you're watching!
