History
The Cairns International airport started out as local man Tom MacDonald's sandy landing strip back in 1928. By 1934 the people of Cairns had chipped in enough money to build a real landing strip and in 1936 the Cairns City Council bought 162 hectares of land, building three runways. This tiny airport was soon taken over by the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II before it was bought by the Cairns Harbour Board. The Harbour Board was renamed the Cairns Port Authority, which is now the owner and controller of the Cairns Airport under the Airport Local Ownership Plan. Since 1928 this airport dream has grown and been redeveloped numerous times resulting in an international Australian asset.
